When it now comes to regulating online gambling, there is no global law. The rules and regulations that govern online gambling varies from country to country.

In Australia, the rules and regulations that govern online gambling are based on the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. The government at the time said that they passed the act to protect their citizens from the dangerous effects of gambling. Breaking this law does not mean that you have to be in Australia and it is irrelevant whether the company is owned by an Australian or not. This act made it against the law to get an Australian citizen with an interactive gambling service while the citizen is in Australia. An Australian is actually allowed to play casino or poker games online.

In Canada, the criminal code does allow online gambling. What it does say is that no establishment can have gambling unless it is controlled or licensed by the government. Despite this law, there are about 1,2000 to 1,400 websites that make casino games available to Canadian citizens.
If the gambling website is within the borders of Canada, the Canadian officials are prepared to prosecute, but they have only done it once. They went after the Starnet Communications International that was run by Vancouver residents. The court did find that this company had enough content in Canada to be prosecuted. Its punishment was a $100,000 fine and had to forfeit $4 million in profit.

In France, the government thought of new laws to regulate and try to tax online gambling in 2009. The French budget minister said that the French were attempting to adapt to Internet reality. The government had agreed that the government would not try to ban about 25,000 websites. The government would rather give out licences than punishment. Betting exchanges would still remain against the law under these 2009 plans.

In Germany, a German Interstate Treaty on gaming was originally enforced on January 1,2008. This treaty banned all of online gambling in this country. There constituted an exception given to wagers and horse racing. The European Gaming and Betting Association appealed to the European Commission since this new law seemed very strict. In 2012, the European Court of Justice felt that Germany had to open up its gambling monopoly. From 2012, most German provinces would be given the opportunity to get gambling licences.

In India, the state of Maharashtra has made online gambling a prohibited offense. Other legislatures in India are silent about the rules and regulations regarding online gambling. The most recent law did try to regulate online gambling by having Indian Internet providers decide whether a website is associated with breaking the law or not.
In Israel, in December of 2005, the Attorney General felt that all online gambling operations were prohibited. He or she also made the credit card companies to stop doing business with gambling people. The ban exists until today except for Play65. Play65 had unique site activity that was special enough that it was permitted to exist.
Rules and regulations vary across the world when it now comes to online gambling.
